You might consider taking the number 3 through Kaohsiung and to Kenting. Its a fairly simple route which would take you to a nice beach/national park destination where the weather is nice, the food and drinks are plentiful and it should be largely unaffected by the typhoon. Otherwise you could visit the North coast around Keelung/Jeelong area which is a very nice drive. The East coast highway 9 should be relatively practical at least as far as Hwalien and there is the famous Taroko gorge to visit as well as good diving and whale watching according to many. I tried to go whale watching, but it has to fit in with the weather and the whale season, and I have so far not managed to get the timing just right. If you do go, then be sure to let us know how whichever of your trips went. Picture links would be nice too! :)
